SS Yongala Wreck

The No.1 Wreck Dive in Australia!!

ss-yongalaThe S.S. Yongala Wreck located in the world heritage Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is voted as one of the top 10 wreck dives in the world!

The Yongala sank during a cyclone in 1911, with 122 crew and passengers on board, it sat untouched until 1958 when divers began to explore the wreck.  It has since become a protected site under the Historical Shipwrecks Act (1976).  The wreck begins at 14m below the surface down to 28m at the sand line and at 100m in length there is plenty to explore!

Due to it’s remote location it has become a large artificial reef becoming home to a diverse range of marine life!  Expect to be amazed by the huge schools of fish, giant trevally, giant groupers, eagle and marble rays, turtles, maori wrasse, sharks, macro life and beautiful soft and hard corals covering the lengths of the ship!  During the winter months you can also expect to see and hear the humpback whales cruising by!!
